Play the Tape Forward
You’ve decided you want to have an alcohol free Easter (or any holiday!). You want to be present for your kids and family. You remember years gone by where mimosas started flowing early and the day got hazy. Or maybe you drank too much, got in an argument with a family member or something else bad happen. Here’s a technique that helped me in my early days it’s called “Play the Tape Forward”.
“Play the Tape Forward” is a technique used to help tackle drinking cravings and urges. When a craving appears, you picture what would happen if you gave in. I think of an old school VHS and watching as the tape plays out.
Imagine having that first drink, and ask yourself what would you do next. Then ask yourself what would happen after that. The goal of the exercise is to be as honest with yourself as possible. When you continue on in this way, “playing the tape forward” in your mind, it shows you exactly were that first drink would lead you.
