The KEY to Raising Healthy Kids…. I bet it’s not what you think!

As parents, we all want the very best for our kids, and that includes making sure they're healthy and happy. But have you ever stopped to think about where that health actually starts? Hint: it's not with the kids themselves. Nope, the key to raising healthy kids is actually starting with ourselves.

Now, I know what you might be thinking. "Wait, what? I thought this was supposed to be about parenting, not self-improvement." And I get it - it can be tempting to read all the baby books and parenting articles out there, trying to find the perfect formula for raising happy and healthy kids. But the truth is, all the parenting strategies in the world won't matter if we're not taking care of ourselves first.

Think about it: so much of what we do as parents revolves around how we show up for our kids. When they're having a tough day, we're the ones they turn to for comfort and support. When they're feeling overwhelmed or anxious, we're the ones who help them process those emotions.

And let's face it - parenting isn't always sunshine and rainbows.

There are going to be moments where we're tested - where we might feel angry, frustrated, or just plain exhausted. In those moments, how we react and respond can have a huge impact on our kids.

That's why it's so important to make sure we're healthy people on the inside, in mind, body, and spirit. When we take care of ourselves - whether that means getting enough sleep, exercising regularly, or spending time doing things we enjoy - we're better equipped to handle the challenges that come with parenting. We're more patient, more empathetic, and better able to connect with our kids on a deeper level.

Of course, being a healthy person is easier said than done. There are a million different things that can affect our mental and physical health, from stress and anxiety to poor diet and lack of exercise. And let's not forget the emotional toll that parenting can take - it's a rollercoaster of highs and lows, and sometimes it's hard to know how to cope.

So where do we start? Well, the first step is simply recognizing that our own health matters. It's not selfish or indulgent to prioritize our own self-care - in fact, it's essential if we want to be the best parents we can be. From there, it's all about finding what works for us as individuals. Maybe that means scheduling in regular exercise or meditation time, or carving out space in our day for a favorite hobby. Maybe it means seeking out therapy or counseling if we're struggling with anxiety or depression. Or maybe it means simply acknowledging that we're doing the best we can, and giving ourselves grace when things get tough.

Whatever path we choose, the important thing is to keep in mind that our own health and wellbeing is intricately tied to our ability to be good parents. So the next time you're feeling overwhelmed or stressed out, take a step back and remember: the best way to raise healthy kids is by starting out with ourselves.
