What is DRUNKOREXIA?
Years back, I went to dinner with friends and decided to skip the rice in my bowl to save calories. I ended up getting totally shit faced that night and the joke became, "Always get the rice!"
Have you ever heard of drunkorexia? It's this pretty concerning trend where people limit their food intake in order to save room for alcohol calories, with the hope of not gaining weight. It combines disordered eating with excessive alcohol consumption, and it’s not a good mix.
When you replace meals with alcohol, it's really unhealthy for your body. Not only does it affect your physical appearance, but it also depletes your body of essential vitamins and nutrients, leading to a whole host of health issues. I'm talking anemic, acne-prone skin, brittle nails and hair, dizziness, bloating, and constipation. And sure, you might not gain weight, but a malnourished body is anything but healthy.
This is how I lived my life. Most days I’d try to eat around 1000 food calories to save room to finish the day with many glasses of wine. I’m sure some days my food calories and wine calories were equal, as hard as it is for me to admit. I would do anything to get my body to look the way I wanted except quit drinking wine.
After ditching wine now days I’m fitter and stronger than ever. I can say I’m happy when I look in the mirror! I fuel my body with healthy, nutritious food. My skin is clearer, my hair thicker, no more wine belly jiggle! I didn’t realize how much all those empty calories were affecting me.
If you catch yourself in these thought patterns, it might be a good time to reassess your relationship with alcohol. Remember, it's okay to seek help and support if you feel like your drinking habits are becoming unhealthy. You're not alone in this journey, and there are resources available to help you navigate through it.
So let's all take a minute to remember that our bodies need nourishment, and that means eating balanced meals and drinking alcohol in moderation or not at all. And next time you're out to eat, be sure to get the rice!
