Alcohol Is Making You Fat: Let’s Talk About It
I’ll say it. I can, because I’ve been there! I used to want to lose weight and tone up desperately. I’d try different workouts, cut carbs, count calories, do whatever it took… except give up wine. That was non-negotiable.
Here’s the hard truth I refused to see back then: Alcohol was the biggest thing standing between me and my health goals.
The Empty Calories in Wine
A glass of wine might seem harmless, but those calories add up fast. A standard pour of wine has around 125 calories. But let’s be real when was the last time you had just one glass? Two, maybe three? That’s hundreds of extra, completely nutrient-free calories. Unlike food, alcohol doesn’t fill you up, fuel your body, or do anything beneficial. It’s just extra baggage.
And what does your body do with that extra energy? It stores it. Usually right where you don’t want it your stomach, your hips, your arms.
Your Body’s Only Priority: Getting Rid of the Toxin
Alcohol is a toxin. When you drink, your body stops everything else burning fat, digesting food, repairing muscles so it can process and eliminate the alcohol first. Your metabolism shifts gears, focusing on detox rather than fat-burning.
So, all that effort you’re putting into eating right and working out? It’s being sabotaged the moment you pour a drink. Your body isn’t using that protein shake to rebuild muscle; it’s too busy dealing with the alcohol you just consumed.
Half-Assed Workouts & the Flabby Stomach Struggle
I remember the frustration of dragging myself to the gym after a night of drinking. I was sluggish, bloated, and unmotivated. My workouts were half-hearted at best. And even when I did push myself, my body wasn’t responding the way I wanted.
That stubborn stomach bloat? It wasn’t going anywhere. Because while I was working my abs, I was also drinking something that wrecks digestion, inflames the gut, and stores excess fat right in my midsection.
I Thought Giving Up Wine Would Be a Sacrifice: It Was the Best Thing I Ever Did
Let me revisit the thought: “give up wine.”
I don’t feel like I’m giving up anything anymore. In fact, I feel empowered. I no longer put that poisoninto my body. My workouts are stronger. My stomach is leaner. My energy is through the roof.
If you’re stuck in the cycle of trying to get in shape but refusing to look at alcohol as part of the problem, I get it. I was there. But I can also tell you on the other side of that belief is something so much better. Real health, real confidence, and a body that finally responds to the effort you put in.
And trust me wine is not worth standing in your own way!
