It turned into this endless cycle where I wanted to cut back, but that overwhelming urge for just one more glass always got to me. I was caught in the clutches of alcohol, but the thought of being labeled as an alcoholic was terrifying.
Here's the truth though: you don't have to hit rock bottom for your drinking to be a problem. Seriously, it's a common misconception. We tend to believe that unless we crash our car or get DUIs, we're totally fine. But that couldn't be further from the truth.
Sure, on the outside, my life seemed normal. My kids were taken care of, and I made sure they had everything they needed. But deep down, I knew I had crossed a line with my drinking. Covid hit, and being home all the time pushed me to start reaching for that glass of wine earlier and earlier in the day.
Then, I stumbled upon the book "This Naked Mind” by Annie Grace. It was eye-opening! The book completely changed my mindset around alcohol and the grip it had on me. It made me question all those societal norms around drinking and gave me the tools to make a change.
